April Spotlight: Designs by Jude Insider with Tamara Casey

Welcome back to our April edition of the Designs by Jude Insider! This month, we're thrilled to spotlight Tamara Casey, our talented collaborator who designs sewing patterns for Club Grace. We're bringing you this edition at the end of the month to allow our dedicated sewers ample time to create Tamara's extraordinary pattern of the month, "Looking Glass." This captivating pattern features a fully lined, simple yet timeless dress with gathered short sleeves and a faux placard front, accompanied by a long-sleeve jacket adorned with ruffles at the cuff, a two-tab collar, and an attached peplum. What makes "Looking Glass" truly special is its versatility; by combining different colors and patterns, sewers can bring to life a myriad of whimsical characters, from the White Rabbit to the Queen of Hearts and the Mad Hatter. This pattern was created in sponsorship of the Club Grace subscription through the Virtual Doll Convention, underscoring Tamara’s commitment to bringing exclusive and delightful designs to our community. If you are not on the subscription, you can purchase the pattern on the Designs by Jude Website - plus some fun additional items to complete your costume.

Tamara has been hard at work adding delightful additions to her website. From the charming Queen of Hearts earrings to miniature playing cards designed to add the perfect finishing touch to your "Looking Glass" Pattern, there's something for every doll enthusiast. Among these offerings is the miniature "Sewing Essentials" set, meticulously scaled for 16" dolls. This kit includes three bolts of fabric, three spools of thread, pins, a sewing book, paper tape measure, three Designs by Jude patterns, and a pair of scissors. Each essentials kit is thoughtfully curated with the same elements, featuring varied fabric, patterns, and accessories. These miniature additions elevate your finished projects, and even if you're not an avid sewer, they're perfect for enhancing purchased garments or dressing up your already-dressed dolls.

Tamara has crafted some fantastic YouTube videos this month to guide you through the process of creating her patterns. Here are two delightful videos from which you can enjoy and glean inspiration.

Through the Lens: Capturing Your Wonderland Creations

For all the sewers and collectors with a flair for the whimsical, we present some splendid photo opportunity ideas that are sure to complement your "Looking Glass" creations. If you've stitched up an Alice costume or have one gracing your collection, these scenes will be the perfect playground for your dolls to showcase their Wonderland attire. Prepare your cameras to capture the spirit of Wonderland—be it a madcap tea party, a royal croquet match, or a tumble down the rabbit hole. Let the adventure begin!

  1. Tea Party Extravaganza: Set up a miniature tea party with an assortment of tiny cups, plates, and teapots. Place your dolls in the middle of the scene as if they were having tea with the Mad Hatter. Use vibrant tablecloths and napkins to make the colors pop.

  2. Garden of Talking Flowers: Recreate the iconic garden of talking flowers from Alice in Wonderland by arranging various colorful flowers around your doll. You can use a mix of real flowers and high-quality silk flowers to create a lush, enchanting environment.

  3. Chessboard Challenge: Position your dolls on a black and white checkered board to mimic the grand chessboard from the story. You can craft tiny crowns and scepters to accessorize the dolls as if they were the chess pieces come to life.

  4. Rabbit Hole Adventure: Create a backdrop that looks like the famous rabbit hole with swirling patterns and whimsical shapes. Have your doll positioned as if she's just about to tumble down into the fantastical world that awaits.

  5. Queen's Croquet Ground: Set up a croquet game with mallets and hoops, and if you can, use some flamingo and hedgehog figures to imitate the quirky croquet scene from the book. This could make for a quirky and interactive photo setting.

Spotlight on Creation: 'Looking Glass' Masterpieces

We're delighted to showcase the creativity and dedication of Marie Scopel and Gale Torres, who have beautifully brought the "Looking Glass" pattern to life. Immediately after the pattern's release, these talented individuals put needle to fabric to craft their own unique interpretations of this whimsical theme. Each costume bears a personal touch, highlighting the individual style and flair of the creators. Your shared works not only bring us joy but also serve as a fantastic source of inspiration for the entire community. Thank you, Marie and Gale, for sharing your artistry with us!

Renaissance Reflections: Crafting the Celtic Charm Wardrobe | Designs by Jude Insider

Renaissance Reflections: Crafting the Celtic Charm Wardrobe | Designs by Jude Insider

As the fresh bloom of spring begins to unfold, we at the Virtual Doll Convention and Designs by Jude are thrilled to bring you the enchanting allure of our March Club Grace Collaboration Pattern of the Month - "Celtic Charm." With its intricate details and historical elegance, this pattern designed by the talented Tamara Casey, not only captures the essence of Celtic heritage but also embodies the joy and creativity of our passionate sewing community.

February Reflections - Bakers Dozen Delights

Before we delve into the Gaelic grandeur, let's take a moment to applaud the splendid array of creations our members sewed up with February's "Bakers Dozen." The flair for fashion and attention to detail you've all shown is nothing short of inspiring. The varied fabrics and hues have brought to life a tapestry of designs that beautifully reflect each creator's unique style. Bravo to all for a month filled with fun and fabulous renditions! Due to the popularity of this design, Tamara made it for Ellowyne and Neema, 15” Gene dolls, and 12” Poppy Parker! What fun. Be sure to check Designs by Jude for coordinating fabrics and jewelry accessories for this pattern.

A Renaissance of Style: The Historical Elegance Behind Our Celtic Charm

As we unveil the "Celtic Charm" pattern, inspired by the intricate designs of Renaissance festival costumes, let’s embark on a brief journey through the tapestry of history that informs this splendid attire. Renaissance festivals, a celebration of the vibrant and culturally rich period of the 14th to 17th centuries, offer a window into a world where fashion was both a form of art and a statement of status.

Renaissance costume is characterized by its ornate detail, rich fabrics, and the significant influence of the Celtic tradition. The intricate patterns and embroidery found in Celtic attire are deeply rooted in a past where clothing signified more than just necessity; it was emblematic of one's heritage and standing in society. The Celts, known for their distinctive art and cultural significance, often adorned their garments with symbolic knotwork, nature-inspired motifs, and vibrant colors drawn from their lush surroundings.

The "Celtic Charm" pattern reflects this heritage with its lush greenery reminiscent of the Celtic landscapes, golden trims that mimic the wealth of detail lavished upon festival attire, and the flowing lines that suggest both nobility and the freedom of the Renaissance spirit.

In creating your own "Celtic Charm" garment, you’re not just crafting a costume; you’re reviving a piece of history. Each stitch is a homage to the skilled artisans of yore, and every completed dress is a testament to the enduring allure of Renaissance fashion. Whether your doll is attending a grand ball or gracing the halls of a castle, this pattern is designed to enchant and captivate, bridging the centuries with its timeless grace.

Pair the perfect accessory with Tamara Casey’s Irish Wheat Necklace. This is a gold-tone interlocking necklace with a clasp back.

Community Spotlight: A Celtic Creation to Admire

This month's community spotlight shines on Pam Walker, whose craftsmanship has truly brought the Celtic Charm pattern to life. Pam's rendition of Tamara Casey’s design is a wonderful display of skill and attention to detail, with each element of the costume beautifully executed. From the vivid green of the gown that echoes the rolling hills of Ireland to the delicate lace trim that adds a touch of Renaissance elegance, Pam's work is a testament to the joy and artistry found in doll costume creation. Her addition of a floral crown and the poised violin completes the ensemble, transporting us to a time of lyrical tales and courtly dances. Bravo, Pam, for a job marvelously done!

Gale Torres JUST posted this gorgeous photo of her Graces in their St. Patrick’s Day ensembles! Shown here is the “Shamrock Shimmer” VDC Outfit of the month, and Celtic Charm from Tamara’s pattern. Great work!

Serving Up Style: The Evolution of Waitress Fashion Through the Decades

A waitress at NYC's Exchange Buffet in the 1920s.

The iconic waitress outfit has its roots in the early 20th century, evolving with the times while remaining a symbol of service and hospitality. Initially, waitresses wore long skirts and aprons to keep their clothes clean, a practical choice that also adhered to the modest fashion of the era. As the 1920s roared in, hemlines rose, and the uniforms became slightly shorter and more functional, reflecting the societal shift towards women's independence.

During the 1940s and 1950s, the post-war economic boom saw an explosion of diners across America, and the waitress uniform became a cultural staple. The classic look of this era featured a fitted blouse and a knee-length skirt with a full apron, often accessorized with a playful hat or cap. These outfits were designed to be practical and allow for easy movement, but they also carried a certain charm that defined the dining experience of the time.

The poodle skirt, a quintessential symbol of the '50s, was a circle skirt often adorned with whimsical appliqués, like the famous poodle or, in the case 'The Baker's Dozen' pattern, delightful doughnuts. The look was completed with saddle shoes, bobby socks, and a scarf, often tied around the neck or in the hair, adding a touch of femininity and flair to the uniform.

As the decades passed, waitress uniforms continued to change. The 1960s and 70s introduced polyester and other easy-care fabrics, making uniforms more durable and colorful. By the 1980s and 90s, the formal aspect of the waitress uniform began to relax, reflecting the casual dining culture that was emerging.

Today, the waitress outfit can vary widely, from casual t-shirts and aprons with the restaurant's logo to chic and modern ensembles in high-end establishments. However, the classic 1950s diner waitress uniform remains a beloved and nostalgic symbol, celebrated by collectors and enthusiasts for its unique blend of practicality, style, and a dash of sweetness — much like the delectable doughnuts that adorn Tamara’s 'The Baker's Dozen' pattern.

Member Creations: A Dash of Individuality with Tamara Casey's 'Baker's Dozen' Pattern

Each collector and creator brings their own unique zest to the world of doll fashion, and nowhere is this more evident than in their personalized renditions of Tamara Casey's 'Baker's Dozen' pattern. Our talented community members have taken this delightful nod to 1950s diner style and infused it with their individual flair. From custom color palettes to hand-picked fabric patterns, each adaptation of the 'Baker's Dozen' speaks to the creator's own story and style. Below, you’ll find a gallery of these charming creations, each showcasing the boundless creativity of our cherished doll enthusiasts. Take a moment to admire the intricate details and creative spirit that breathe life into these timeless pieces.

In the spirit of fresh starts and new beginnings, Tamara Casey unveiled the 'Girl Power' pattern for Ellowyne Wilde during VDC's Toast to 2024 celebration. The response was phenomenal, with an outpouring of requests for this empowering design to be adapted for Grace and other RTB101 body dolls. Tamara heard the call and, with her characteristic responsiveness, has now expanded the availability of this vibrant pattern. It's ready to inspire confidence and style in your collection!

Watch as a timeless treasure, the vintage Pfaff 130 sewing machine, is skillfully revitalized in Tamara’s newest video feature. The transformation takes place in mere minutes and for less than $100. Instead of investing in a refurbished substitute, Tamara discovers that a new motor and foot pedal can effortlessly extend the machine's longevity, bypassing a trip to the repair shop. This enlightening demonstration is a must-see for any doll enthusiast who cherishes their crafting tools as much as their creations.

Wrap Dress, Diane von Furstenberg, 1975

"Day to date" designs have been a cornerstone in fashion for decades. Here are some iconic styles that epitomized this trend:

  1. The Wrap Dress - Invented by Diane von Fürstenberg in the '70s, the wrap dress could take a woman from the office to a dinner date effortlessly.

  2. The Little Black Dress - Made famous by Audrey Hepburn in 'Breakfast at Tiffany's,' this classic piece is the ultimate "day to date" dress.

  3. Trench Dress - A spin-off of the classic trench coat, the trench dress could be both professional and romantic with the right accessories.

  4. Pencil Skirt Suits - Popular in the '50s and '60s, these could go from a business meeting straight to a cocktail party with just a change of blouse or accessories.

  5. Jumpsuits - A '70s and '80s staple, jumpsuits have made a comeback and are incredibly versatile for various occasions.

  6. Shirt Dresses - With a quick switch from flats to heels and adding some jewelry, the shirt dress is another iconic piece that fits the "day to date" category.

The Club Grace Pattern of the Month from Tamara Casey is “Friends.” The pattern features a princess seam dress with balloon sleeves and inverted box pleats in the skirt. The dress is lined through the bodice and skirt and has a snap closure.

Dream Closet Recap. Grab a snack and something to sip on because we are recapping ALL the patterns from the last season by Tamara Casey. What fun!

NUMBER ONE: The first pattern to kick off our season was ‘Cheerful.’ This pattern was reminiscent of a dress that one of Tamara’s favorite teachers wore. It was perfectly in theme with our box which honored teachers.

NUMBER TWO: Next was 1980’s Flashback. This pattern was SUCH a blast. I (Rachel) was a little nervous about what Tamara Casey might think for our 1980’s month but it turns out, she is a gym and workout fan, and she DELIVERED. This was one of the most memorable patterns to date for its carefree fun!

Symphony brings us to NUMBER THREE. The pattern features a one-shoulder floor-length dress with a fitted silhouette and flared mermaid skirt. This glamorous gown was the perfect sewing addition to our Violin Concerto themed month. This is one of the most beautiful gowns ever created for Club Grace members.

NUMBER FOUR: Boardwalk on the Beach. The pattern features a flirty fitted bustier bodice that can be attached to a full skirt or shorts to make a beach-ready romper. This pattern was the perfect addition to our beachwear themed month.

NUMBER FIVE is Cooler Weather. The pattern features a long sleeve bodysuit with a cross-over front and a pair of slim-leg jeans with a back yoke, rolled cuffs, and six pockets. It was perfect to help the Club Members cross over from Summer to Fall.

NUMBER SIX! There is so much to say about Hocus Pocus which is the 6th pattern from Tamara. The versatility! The style! The costume! This pattern is everything a pattern could be and more. The ways you can customize the looks from a costume to a chic jumpsuit is GENIUS.

NUMBER SEVEN: We have always felt the Grace doll exudes the look and style of the Princess of Wales and ‘The Duchess’ by Tamara Casey fits this style perfectly. The pattern features a knee-length dress with princess seams, fitted midriff, 3/4 length sleeves, and an envelope collar. The dress is fully lined with a zipper closure.

NUMBER EIGHT is Frosty Air. The pattern features a fully lined coat dress with long sleeves and a rounded collar. There are four godets in the hemline to add a flirty flare. Also included are a holiday hat and fuzzy muff. Our Members love when the pattern corresponds with the theme, and this pattern fit perfectly with the season, and the style of the December 2022 Dream Closet Box fashion.

NUMBER NINE was Spring Festival. The pattern features a pair of slim-fitting cigarette pants with ankle vents and a short sleeve Asian-inspired top with two front vents and a swan neck collar. Just last month, this pattern debuted and it was a perfect way to usher in the new year!

And Number Ten on our list is Friends, the pattern for February.

From Fashion dolls, to Smart Dolls, to everything in between, there is a pattern for everyone with Designs by Jude. Tamara Casey is a master at her craft, and we are continually grateful beyond measure for the opportunity to collaborate and learn about sewing with Tamara Casey through Club Grace.

Tamara Casey of Designs by Jude is a sponsor of Virtual Doll Convention’s Club Grace which is a monthly doll club complete with a clothing delivery subscription, and a monthly digital component that features a fantastic new pattern by Tamara. It has been a wonderful year full of FASHION, thanks to many contributors, especially for our sewers, Tamara Casey. This month’s pattern from Tamara Casey for Club Grace is The Duchess shown on the right. The pattern features a knee-length dress with princess seams, fitted midriff, 3/4 length sleeves, and an envelope collar. The dress is fully lined with a zipper closure.

Tamara has been making fabulous videos for YouTube - these sewing tutorials can help you tremendously!

The talented members of Club Grace started sewing the November pattern and immediately shared photos of their gorgeous creations. Thank you, Debra Cooper, and Gale Torres

Club Grace member, Debra Cooper, did a spectacular job with her pattern - the plaid pattern and the British background give this creation an A+ with extra credit!

The theme of the Club Grace Month plus our “The Duchess” pattern theme got us in the mood for Royal Couture, so we scoured Tamara’s Vault for patterns “Fit for a Princess.” Below are our top 10 favorite patterns for Grace or any RTB101 Robert Tonner doll. We would love to know your favorite!

Speaking of Princesses…do not miss Tamara’s latest video demonstrating how to create a dress with princess seams. Here is the pattern.

A Creative Sewer! Elena Wirick-Velez

We just LOVE this - Club Grace Member Elena Wirick-Velez made a true mermaid version of the Symphony Pattern from July.

“When Ellowyne heard that the "Symphony" sewing pattern was also called a mermaid dress, she asked if I could make her into a mermaid princess. The fun trim at the bottom comes off to change the look. Here is how it turned out.”

The VDC Better Together Event was a huge success, and Tamara Casey rocked her sewing event! Hundreds of attendees made versions of Retail Therapy for Neema and Ellowyne Wilde.

In just over a year, Tamara Casey has amassed over 4,000 subscribers on YouTube - for good reason! Her videos are clear, and full of helpful tips to sew. She started her channel and never stopped. We have to celebrate 4k!

Designs by Jude December Holiday Insider Blog

A message from Rachel: “From February 2021 to December 2021, Tamara Casey of Designs by Jude has collaborated with the Virtual Doll Convention to create a monthly pattern for Club Grace, a virtual doll club started by VDC for the Grace Marie Fitzpatrick doll designed by Robert Tonner. The designs each month ranged from casuals, to fancy, to flirty, and each one was expertly designed and offered to the members of Club Grace. Along with the patterns. Tamara also created videos for the members to learn how to make the garment.

The creativity of the members and the community involved when sharing their work was one of the highlights of my year. I loved seeing all of the members take these patterns and run with their own colors and styles, with Tamara’s pattern as the seed to start.

Thank you, Tamara Casey, for your hard work this year. You have been a driving force for so many to learn, grow, and enjoy their sewing. We are excited for 2022 and beyond!”
