Patterns with Personality: A VDC Collaboration Spotlight
Hi friends,
There’s something so special about creating with your hands—whether it’s sewing a new dress for your favorite doll or just spending an afternoon dreaming up a fresh look with fabric, trim, and thread. If you’re anything like us, you live for those magical moments when a pattern turns into something with real personality.
That’s why we love working with Tamara Casey of Designs by Jude. Tamara is the heart and hands behind so many of the sewing patterns featured in our VDC subscription boxes. Her designs are thoughtful, playful, and perfectly tailored for collectors who love to sew for their dolls—or who are just beginning to dip a toe into that creative pool.
Each month, Tamara takes inspiration from our themes and brings them to life in miniature. Whether it’s a flouncy prairie skirt for Anne, a regal ballgown for Grace, or a bold fashion moment for Ellowyne, she somehow always gets it just right.
This month, we’re highlighting three of Tamara’s newest VDC collaborations—and they couldn’t be more different or more fun. From the quiet elegance of a secret garden stroll to a full-on school spirit parade, there’s something here to spark every imagination.
Let’s take a closer look!
“Secret Garden” – A Dress Made for Daydreaming
Grace has never met a garden gate she didn’t want to peek behind—and this month’s sewing pattern feels like it was pulled straight from one of her daydreams. Designed by Tamara Casey in collaboration with the VDC Club Grace subscription, Secret Garden is a romantic 18th-century-inspired gown that feels right at home under blooming trellises or wandering through ivy-covered paths.
This pattern pairs an open-front floral overskirt with a cheerful yellow underskirt that gives the entire look a playful, sun-kissed twist. The fitted bodice features delicate trim options and lace cuffs for that extra bit of storybook detail, and the full silhouette makes it a true showstopper on the shelf.
One of the things we adore most about this design is its versatility. Sewists have been adding their own flair with ribbon trims, brocade fabrics, and even layering soft netting under the skirt for more volume. Some have leaned into full historical drama, while others have turned it into something more whimsical—like Grace playing dress-up in Grandma’s attic.
We’ve already seen a few stunning versions pop up in the community, and each one is a little different—which is exactly what makes sewing so magical. If you’ve made this one already, we’d love to see your take! And if not, it’s the perfect project to usher in summer with a little fantasy and floral flair.
“Flower Fields” – A Soft Fashion Statement with Big Energy
Ellowyne may have a flair for ennui, but we think even she would crack a smile in this breezy little number. Flower Fields, designed by Tamara Casey for the VDC Wilde subscription, is a fresh, floral celebration of spring with a hint of vintage charm and modern flair.
At first glance, it’s a playful puff-sleeve jumpsuit—but Tamara being Tamara, she added bonus variations that turn this pattern into a complete mini wardrobe. You can make a darling tea-length day dress, a floaty ruffled skirt, or even mix and match the top with other separates you may already have in your collection.
What we love most? The fabric really transforms the mood. Done in a soft gray floral, it feels like a sweet Sunday in the garden. Use a bold retro print or a splashy neon and suddenly it’s fashion week in Harajuku. (And yes—some of you have done that and we’re obsessed.)
This is one of those patterns that’s just fun to sew. The construction is simple enough to be satisfying, but still offers plenty of space to play. If you’ve been itching to make something light and cheerful for your Wilde girls, this one’s calling your name. And trust us—she’ll thank you for the pick-me-up.
Anne – Marching to Her Own Beat
Anne Fitzpatrick is never short on imagination, and the School Spirit pattern by Tamara Casey captures her playful, curious spirit to a T. Designed for the Anne subscription, this ensemble has a charming mix of vintage schoolhouse style and lighthearted parade-day flair.
The look features a long-sleeved, high-collared dress with princess seams and a flared above-the-knee skirt—classic, crisp, and full of personality. It’s paired with modest undies, short socks, and the sweetest coordinating hat, which adds just the right finishing touch (and makes us think she’s headed off to lead the school announcements or maybe start her own marching club).
There’s so much you can do with this pattern. Some of our community members have sewn it up in bold reds and golds for a full-on majorette moment, while others have used pastels, calicos, and sweet trims to give it a softer, storybook feel. However you style it, this outfit has Anne written all over it—spirited, smart, and just a little bit spunky.
If you're a collector who likes variety in your sewing, School Spirit is such a treat. Two looks, endless possibilities, and a ton of charm packed into one little pattern. We can’t wait to see how you make it your own.
Community Corner – Your Makes, Your Magic
